Summer’s in full swing..money tight but want to get out the house with the family?

Here’s some great fun and free ideas that will keep the kids happy and allow your family to spend more quality time together!

1. Strike up some fun!Kids bowl free

Introduce the wildly fun game of bowling to your family! Kids bowl for free through September by registering at kidsbowlfree.com

Now, why should you go bowl with the family?   Hmmm…let’s see…bowling helps reinforce teamwork in the kiddos, improve sportsmanship in everyone, you get to spend fun family time together and if you have kids that are still learning about numbers & addition, they can practice the skills they learned during the school year while keeping score of the game!

Oh, and that cool air-conditioning isn’t so bad either!

2. Visit the Grand Canyon, Yosemite or Yellowstone…grand canyon

It’s the National Park Service’s 97th birthday, so on August 25, the government will waive the entrance fees to every national park.  Check nps.gov for information. For our service men and women…hit up your local NPS office (store.usgs.gov) for an annual pass that gets you into all the federal parks for free ($80 savings). Thanks for serving, soldiers.

3. Home Projects with the Kids

Pittsburgh gardening writer, Doug Oster, will send you a packet of heirloom tomato seeds to plant—all he asks is that you return some of the seeds at the end of the summer, so he can continue the program. See dougoster.com for details…how neat is that….you get to teach the invaluable lesson of growing your own food to your children!

Do you remember going to the drive in as a kid? NO? You should experience it and bring the family for the fun also!

Drive in movies

4. Catch movies on the big screen

In July and August, Clearview Cinemas Kid’s Club (clearviewcinemas.com) offers twice-a-week 10:30 a.m. matinees of favorite family movies, for no charge. Wouldn’t you like to see Rio on the BIG screen?

Many cities—and even some beaches—offer outdoor movies during the summer. Check your town’s official website, or Google free outdoor movies and your hometown…you’ll be surprised at what you find!

BONUS! When your kids bring a new book report into a Showcase Cinema “Bookworm Wednesdays” matinee this summer, they earn a movie ticket—and get a parent and siblings under 6 in too. Our teachers recommend reading throughout the summer to reinforce their learning…..this is just an extra incentive to keep them reading!

Or…..maybe if you’re like me and never know what the Texas weather will be like…. …and prefer to watch a movie on the small screen.

redbox5. Text REDBOOK to 727272 and Redbox will send you a code good for a free movie rental every single month.

I can tell you myself, how awesome this little text is….

Watch it after the kids go to sleep for a no-cost date night!

Don’t skimp on the quality Mom & Dad time!

Do you remember how much fun you had as a kid at the skating rink?

I loved going to “SkateTown” in Pampa, TX…those were the days!

6. Share that fun and excitement with your entire family at the roller rink!

Sign up at kidsskatefree.com and you’ll be emailed up to four kids’ roller-skating passes every single week. (Your skating rink not participating? The site has a letter you can print out, asking them to join the program—if you bring it to them, they might change their mind.)

7. Stimulate your mind daily….by reading..stock your family library

Kids ages 10 and under can join Pottery Barn Kids’ Summer Reading Challenge online: When they finish any of the site’s reading lists, they can get a free book from the store.

Elementary school–age kids can get a free book from Barnes & Noble’s “Imagination’s Destination” program when they download and finish an online reading journal (each one lists at least eight titles).

Kids with a “Young Saver” account at TD Bank will have $10 deposited into their account once they read 10 books by the end of the summer.

8. Take a Magical Vacation without the putting a dent in your bank account!

Located just minutes from Disney World, the two-year-old Wyndham Grand Orlando Resort Bonnet Creek offers a lagoon-style pool, 400 rooms, and—all this summer—your second night free. (Use promo code DISBOGO when you book.) Not a Disney-phile? Stick to the spa, golf course, and restaurants—but promise us you’ll go down the pirate-ship waterslide at least one time, okay?

plant a tree9. Redo your yard and help the environment— for nada, nothing!

Join the Arbor Day Foundation (arborday.org) and you’ll be able to choose 10 trees—we’re talking the good stuff: blue spruce, oaks, red cedars, white pines, and more—to be mailed directly to you. Use the website to find out which are best for your climate.
